Koras.ai

Case study cover: the Koras.ai site on a laptop, headed “Introducing a Hassle-free Way to Encrypt your Emails!” and explaining that placing brackets around a subject line is all the encryption takes, beside icons for Windows, Android, Apple, Outlook and Google

Overview

Together, Sphinx and Koras.ai

Email encryption has never had a usability problem so much as an adoption problem. The tools work; people do not use them, because using them means a plugin, a setup and a different way of sending a message.

Koras.ai wanted encryption that asked nothing of the sender, and Sphinx Solutions built it.

A user encrypts an email by putting brackets around the subject line. That is the whole interface. The system encrypts on the way out and decrypts for the intended recipient, and nobody installs anything.

It runs alongside the email platforms people already have rather than replacing them, on cloud infrastructure built to scale.

Removing the manual steps is the point. Encryption that takes effort gets skipped on exactly the messages that needed it.

Client Requirement

Client Requirement

01

Encryption with nothing to install

Secure an email without extra software or plugins, so using it is not a decision anyone has to make twice.

02

Automatic and invisible

Brackets round the subject line trigger the encryption, and only the right recipient can read what arrives.

03

Works with the email people already use

Fit existing email systems rather than changing how anyone sends a message.

04

Protection that stands up

Encryption strong enough to keep the contents private and prevent unauthorised access, meeting the security standards the industry expects.

Brackets Round the Subject Line, and That Is the Whole Interface

The challenge

Traditional encryption asks the sender to do something different, and that is where it fails. Plugins, technical setup and extra steps meant people simply stopped bothering, leaving the sensitive messages as exposed as the rest.

A solution had to work across different email platforms without disrupting anyone’s workflow, or it would not be adopted either.

Keeping the messages genuinely private while keeping the process automatic is the tension in the whole product: the more the system does for you, the more of the message it has to see.

Many encryption services also keep copies of the mail they handle, which is its own security problem and one the client did not want to inherit.

The solution

We built the encryption around the smallest possible action on the sender’s part.

  1. Brackets round the subject line and nothing else: no installation, no configuration, no change to how the message is written or sent.
  2. A cloud-based system compatible with any email provider, so it integrates rather than requiring modifications to the client someone already uses.
  3. Automated encryption and decryption, so the protection does not depend on anyone remembering to apply it.
  4. End-to-end handling that encrypts and decrypts within the user’s own email environment, so no third party holds the readable message.

Only the intended recipient can decrypt what arrives, and the sender does not have to think about any of it.

The outcome

Sphinx Solutions delivered Koras.ai: automatic email encryption triggered by brackets in the subject line, working inside existing email platforms with nothing to install, on scalable cloud infrastructure.

Customer testimonial

“Koras.ai has completely changed the way we handle email security. Encrypting used to be complicated and now it is as simple as adding brackets around the subject line. We need no extra software or plugins, it works with all our existing email accounts, and our team feels more confident knowing sensitive information stays private. Everything runs without slowing down our workflow.”

How We Work

Development Process

  1. Step 1

    Understanding the security need

We worked out where email encryption actually breaks down, which is adoption rather than cryptography, and designed for that.

  2. Step 2

    Building the encryption logic

A system that recognises the bracketed subject line and encrypts the message automatically from there.

  3. Step 3

    Integration without installation

Designed to work with existing email platforms so nobody needs a plugin, an app or a new address.

  4. Step 4

    End-to-end protection

Encryption protocols that keep the message from unauthorised access and let only the intended recipient decrypt it.

  5. Step 5

    Getting out of the way

The experience work was mostly subtraction: encryption should happen without changing how anyone sends an email.

  6. Step 6

    Testing, launch and support

Rigorous testing and security audits for encryption accuracy and reliability, then launch on scalable cloud infrastructure with continuing improvement afterwards.

Impact

Impact It Created

Security people actually use

The barrier to encrypting an email came down to two brackets, which is the difference between a feature that exists and one that gets used.

Nothing to install, anywhere

No plugins, no apps and no change of provider. It works with the email accounts a team already has.

No cost to the workflow

Encryption and decryption happen in real time, so secure mail sends and arrives at the same speed as ordinary mail.

Private to the intended recipient

Only the person it was sent to can decrypt it, which is what lets a business send sensitive information by email at all.

Summing Up

Koras.ai is a good demonstration that the hard part of security is rarely the cryptography. Encryption tools have been available for decades and go unused because they ask the sender to behave differently. Reducing that ask to a pair of brackets is the entire product.

We built the encryption, the automatic decryption and the integration that lets it sit inside whatever email platform someone already runs, on infrastructure that scales.

Questions &
Answers

What people usually ask about Koras.ai and about building something like it.

It watches for brackets around the subject line and encrypts the message automatically from there. There is no plugin to install and no extra step to remember.

No. It works with the email platforms you already use, so there is nothing to download and nothing to configure.

Yes. It was built to integrate with the major email services rather than to replace them.

No. Only the intended recipient can decrypt and read the message.

No. Encryption and decryption happen in real time, so a secure message moves at the same speed as an ordinary one.
