What Is a PoC?

Building something without checking whether it’s actually feasible first is a good way to burn money and time on a problem you could’ve caught early. A Proof-of-Concept exists to answer one question before anything else gets built: can this actually work?

A PoC isn’t a prototype and it isn’t an MVP. It’s not trying to look or feel like a real product — the only goal is proving the technical idea holds up in practice. Organizations use it to catch problems early, whether that’s AI, blockchain, IoT, cloud infrastructure, or some other piece of tech they’re not sure will actually do what they need.

For a startup, a solid PoC can be the difference in convincing an investor the idea is real and not just a pitch deck. For an enterprise, it’s usually about not committing a large budget to something that turns out to have a fatal technical flaw three months in.

What’s Actually in a PoC

Depending on the project, a PoC might cover:

• Whether the idea is technically feasible at all
• Whether the planned architecture and infrastructure actually hold up
• Testing integrations with third-party APIs
• Performance and scalability under real conditions
• Security and compliance concerns
• Validating an AI or ML model actually does what it’s supposed to
• Cloud deployment checks
• Whether the planned user workflow actually makes sense

None of this is meant to produce a finished product — it’s just enough evidence to decide whether to move forward. Once that’s settled, the next steps are usually UI/UX, MVP development, and the larger build.
